Study Title: INITIATE - Initiating Nicotine Dependent Treatment for Smoking Admitted to Emergency Departments
OHSN-REB Number: 20190485-01H
ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT04163081
Smoking cessation interventions implemented in emergency department (ED) and high-volume clinical care settings have resulted in limited success, owing to factors such as lack of time, motivation, and incentives. A dynamic yet simple and effective approach that addresses the fast-paced nature of acute-care settings is needed. This study proposes a multi-center randomized controlled trial (RCT) to compare the effectiveness of an easy-to-deliver proactive, multi-component tobacco treatment intervention to usual care in the ED and high-volume clinical care settings.
Study participants will be randomized to a group and receive one of two different resource packages, each containing tools to assist in changing their smoking behaviour. Participants will be expected to use the contents of their package and follow-up with study staff at 4-weeks, 6-months, as well as a 1-year timepoints.
The primary objective of the INITIATE study is to determine whether, compared to usual care, smokers who visit an ED or high-volume clinical care setting who receive a proactive tobacco treatment intervention initiated with a “Quit Card”:
will be more likely to quit smoking over the long-term (≥6 months); and,
will have reduced rates of healthcare utilization and death (from 30 days to ≥ 2 years)
