Vaping Cessation using the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation: A Pilot RCT
OHSN-REB #20230670-01H
The primary purpose of this pilot project is to recruit e-cigarette users and determine, if the use of counselling and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can assist participants to quit vaping compared to counselling only. It is important to note that there is currently no standard of care procedure for vaping cessation. The addition of a single counselling session alone, offered to both Intervention and Control participants at baseline, is beyond what is currently offered to vapers and may be of benefit. This study will be the first of its kind to explore methods to support cessation, specifically regarding counselling and the use of NRT products.
The results of this study would be vital in informing larger studies in future by identifying a baseline quit rate in the control arm and developing a titration guide among those willing to use NRT. Also, it will provide information on the vaping cessation rates at 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-months using 1-day, 7-day, and 30-day point prevalence in those randomized to OMSC or usual care. Lastly, it will provide us with an estimate of the attrition rate in this sub-population of e-cigarette users. Combined, these will be essential in determining sample size for an adequately powered study in future.
Recruited (July 2025): 169 participantsÂ
End goal: 180 participantsÂ
Follow-Up Rates: 1 month = 70 completed; 3 month = 31 completed; 6 month = 17 completed; 12 month = stage has not been reached as of yet
